Chapter 12
Try as he might, he couldn’t get the spikes in his hair to stay straight. Jeffrey had been fussing with the hair gel for almost four hours now. In his life, he’d caught thieves, abusers and perverts, but he couldn’t seem to catch a break with this. It was Halloween, and Jeffrey had agreed to go to Eagle River’s Halloween dance with Shilo. In reality, dealing with his hair was a welcome distraction from the other question that was still gnawing on his mind: what if all of Eagle River found out he was a homo?
Sure, Jeffrey had told his partner on the force that he was gay, but he still had reservations about telling anyone else. Besides Keisling, the only ones in Eagle River who knew Jeffrey’s deep, dark secret were Shilo, Adam, Alyssa, and Trixie. Jeffrey didn’t even have to tell Trixie. It was like she had a sixth sense and knew instantly that Jeffrey swung a different way. There were almost fifteen hundred people in Eagle River, and most of them were under the illusion that Jeffrey was a decent, homegrown heterosexual who just hadn’t found the right woman. Jeffrey was unsure how to shatter that illusion without having a bunch of pissed off people to deal with.
“Damn! Why can’t I get these to stay up?” Jeffrey threw down the tube of hair gel, which he had pretty much depleted. He looked at himself in the mirror. He’d tried going for the Sid Vicious punk rocker look. Instead, he looked like a reject from American Idol. Why did he agree to go with Shilo to this dance? While Shilo had taught him a few steps that one night, it wasn’t like Jeffrey had turned into Fred Astaire.
Suddenly, Jeffrey had an idea. He grabbed his phone from the coffee table in his living room and dialed Shilo’s number. After three rings, Shilo picked up.
“Hello?”
“It’s me. I need your help.”
“What’s wrong? Is your costume giving you fits?”
“No. It’s actually my hair. I can’t get it to spike out like a Mohawk.”
“A Mohawk? Jeffrey, your hair isn’t that long to begin with. How can you make it into a Mohawk?”
“Apparently, I can’t. Can you help me?”
“I think so. Come on over, and we’ll see if we can get your hair to cooperate.”
“Say, Shilo. I just realized something. You haven’t told me what costume you’re wearing to this dance.”
“That’s true. I haven’t. See you in a little while.” The line went dead.
Jeffrey set the phone down, wondering why Shilo had been keeping his choice of costume a secret. Was this just the traditional surprise that happy couples spring upon their partners every once in a while, or was Shilo worried that Jeffrey wouldn’t approve? Then he had a horrible thought: what if Shilo was going to dress in drag?
Grabbing his truck keys, Jeffrey wondered if he should call Shilo and ask him point blank if he was going to dress as a woman for Halloween. If that was the case, Jeffrey worried, not only about his reputation, but for Shilo’s well being, as well.
